The University of Dar es Salaam is not only the oldest but also the largest public university in Tanzania. It is offering a degree program with a scholarship option sponsored by ARIPO. The eighteen month Masters Degree in Intellectual Property (MIP) program is jointly offered by the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and the Business Registration and Licensing Agency (BRELA) – National Intellectual Property Office of Tanzania. Announcement for scholarship and admission into the Masters Degree in Intellectual Property (MIP) Program

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the Masters Degree in Intellectual Property Program. The Degree is jointly offered by the University of Dar es Salaam in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization, the World Intellectual Property Organization, and the Business Registration and Licensing Agency – National Intellectual Property Office of Tanzania.

Duration

The maximum duration is Eighteen months, from July 2023 September 2022 to December 2024 (including holidays), structured in Three Phases, as follows:

  • First Phase: July 2023 through September 2023 – Distance Learning Phase through the WIPO Academy Distance Learning Program;
  • Second Phase: November 2023 to March 2024: Residential phase requiring physical attendance of lectures undertaken at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
  • Third Phase: April 2024 to December 2024: Dissertation Phase requiring research and writing on an approved research topic.

The Program adopts a comparative approach, with particular emphasis on the interface of intellectual property law and policies in the context of the existing economic and social dynamics obtaining in Africa. Distance Learning Phase is coordinated by the WIPO Academy, Residential Lectures and Supervision of the dissertation will be given by leading academics, intellectual property practitioners, intellectual property officers and other experts drawn from across Africa.

Entry Requirements

Eligible candidates are required to hold a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree (second class lower) from a recognised university in any discipline. Proof of English proficiency is required, therefore, students coming from countries where the official language is not English will need to submit evidence of proficiency in an appropriate internationally approved English examination e.g. IELTS, TOEFL AWARD. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, participants will be awarded a Masters Degree in Intellectual Property by the University of Dar es Salaam.

N.B.: In addition to the above, candidates are required to have funds for field research to enable them undertake a research phase of the Program. The minimum applicable rate as per University Guidelines is USD 1000.

Scholarships

ARIPO is sponsoring scholarships

With a view to contributing to the development of human resources in the field of intellectual property in Africa, ARIPO will offer few scholarships for the 2023/2024 Academic Year. The scholarship shall cover the cost of a return air ticket, stipend at UDSM, tuition fees, registration fees and medical insurance. BRELA will also offer a total of 5 scholarships for qualified Tanzanians in the 2023/24 academic year.
