Scholarships from the Mandela Rhodes Foundation offer young leaders from across Africa a chance to become part of Nelson Mandela’s legacy of transformative impact. The Mandela Rhodes Scholarship allows successful candidates to study at any South African institution of higher education. The scholarship combines financial support with a leadership program that will challenge you, grow you, and connect you to other young African changemakers.

Leadership development program

The programme is built on principles of reconciliation, education, entrepreneurship, and leadership, and a belief that leadership begins with inner transformation. The program is delivered primarily through a series of week-long residential workshops which you will attend during your time in residence.

Financial Support

The Mandela Rhodes Scholarship offers funding for the core costs associated with your studies. It covers tuition for a one-year Honours degree or a two-year Masters degree in any field at a recognised South African higher learning institution. The funding will meet the costs for tuition and registration fees, allowances for study materials, research, and medical aid, accommodation and meals, personal allowance and economy class travel to and from your home country to your South African university at the beginning and end of your degree. You will also receive a personal allowance.

Applicants are selected on the basis of a number of criteria including, leadership, education, reconciliation and entrepreneurship.

How to apply

The applications timeline runs from March to November of each year, for the following year’s intake and for this year, applications opened on 14 March 2023 and close on 21 April 2023. Apply online, and access our application platform through our website. Follow these steps:
